5. Topic: Fairness/Responsibility

Title: What's Fair?

Level: Intermediate

Objective:

1.     To consider factors which affect readiness for the acceptance of responsibility

2.     To consider the consequences of specific courses of action and the responsibilities related to them.

3.     To foster peer evaluation of inappropriate behaviour.

Curriculum Connections:

Strategies and Activities:

1.     Role play a situation in which a young person wants more privileges, but an adult (teacher or parent) feels that the young person is not ready.

As follow-up, discuss the criteria, besides age, which could be used to decide upon readiness.

2.     Ask students to compile of list of rights and responsibilities which apply to young people and to organize the list in order of priority. Ask students to choose from the list (or the list can be divided) and conduct a survey of community members, parents, and students for their views regarding the rights and responsibilities presented.

Tabulate and post the results.

3.     As follow-up or as a means of evaluation, students may further interview the student body about the results of the survey conducted in 2 above.

Implications for Teaching/Learning:

For each of the rights and responsibilities previously generated by students, make a list of the possible consequences of actions taken. In addition, include possible and appropriate punishment if people acted irresponsibly or if the right was abused.
