1.2 Guiding Principles

The development of this curriculum module is based on the following principles:

All individuals have basic human rights and responsibilities

Human rights for all can exist in a school environment which makes the human rights principles of equality, justice, democracy, freedom and peace central to its philosophy and practice.

Students may require varying degrees of direction and guidance to fully exercise their rights and responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with their evolving capacities.

Educators have a responsibility to ensure that students learn, respect and promote basic human rights for all.

The school administration has a responsibility to ensure students learn, respect and promote basic human rights for all.

All members of the school community have a responsibility to ensure that their behaviour exemplifies respect for the dignity and worth of each individual in the school.
