1.2 Guiding Principles
The development of this curriculum module is based on the following principles:
- All individuals have basic human rights and responsibilities
- Human rights for all can exist in a school environment which makes the human rights
principles of equality, justice, democracy, freedom and peace central to its philosophy
and practice.
- Students may require varying degrees of direction and guidance to fully exercise their
rights and responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with their evolving capacities.
- Educators have a responsibility to ensure that students learn, respect and promote basic
human rights for all.
- The school administration has a responsibility to ensure students learn, respect and
promote basic human rights for all.
- All members of the school community have a responsibility to ensure that their behaviour
exemplifies respect for the dignity and worth of each individual in the school.
