STUDENTS' RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ELEMENTARY LEVEL COMPONENT

The following five lesson plans are designed to be used in a variety of subject areas in the elementary grades. Each lesson cites specific curriculum outcomes from a number of subject areas to which the lesson may be linked. These identified curriculum connections are suggestions - there are many other opportunities for linking concepts related to student rights and responsibilities to the existing curriculum.

These lessons provide samples of approaches and ideas that further student learning about rights and responsibilities. These activities may be connected to initiatives to improve student behaviour in the classroom, the school, and the community.

Educators are encouraged to use these ideas to engage students in thoughtful reflection, problem solving and skill development related to their rights and responsibilities and those of others.

The topics addressed in this module are:

Rights and Responsibilities of the Classroom

                    Thinking about Rights

                    Ranking Rights

                    The Rights Balloon Game

                    What's Fair?
